It is the dog days of summer, 1904. The wealthy merchant city Irkutsk, Russia, also called 'the Paris of Siberia', is happily and excitedly preparing for the exceptional festivities to come.
The Grand Duke of Irkutsk, relative of the last Russian Czar, Nicholas II, and his wife, have invited the most talented poets of the land; in the course of a three-day festival they may bid for the favor of their only daughter, Ana's, hand in marriage.
There is just one hitch: Ana does not want to marry at all.
Defiantly, the Royal Daughter lets the passionate proposals come one after another. She indulges each suitor and his chance; but not a single one of the hundred, who have come from far and wide, can inspire Ana's spirits. The Grand Duke is furious. The Grand Duchess is distraught. Ana's Maid tries to intervene. Finally, just before the highly-awaited proclamation is to be made, and amidst considerable excitement, the Maid comes up with a truly scandalous idea.
